NEW YORK EATS: DOUBLE ZERO VEGAN PIZZA
At the very top on our list of restaurants to try while in New York was Double Zero, located in the heart of the East Village. Double Zero is a plant-based pizzeria concept from plant-based food guru, Matthew Kenney.
There are no dairy, meat or animal products here, and no one is missing it either! This is vegan food meat-eaters will love. The only downside of our visit was that we weren’t particularly hungry the lunchtime that we visited, but we did manage to share a pizza and a sweet course! The space is outfitted with a sexy, urban vibe. Tall, communal tables, backlit wine shelves and the wood-burning stove make the best use of this small space.
We chose the basil sunflower pesto pizza, toppings of slow-cooked onion, confit tomato, herb macadamia ricotta and sunflower seeds. We couldn’t miss out and also added shitake bacon as a topping too! They cook the vegan pizzas in a custom-built wood-burning oven. Their pizzas and their signature tree nut cheeses are delicious.
Not only are there a range of plant-based main courses, but they also offer plant-based desserts and have a list of organic and sustainable wines. Jon and I don’t drink, but of course, we made room for dessert. Their cheesecake was spectacular and is created from cashew cheese and topped with seasonal fruit. We both declared it was the best cheesecake we had ever eaten, including from before we both went vegan.
Double Zero offers delicious, beautiful, vibrant, and nutritious cuisine in a cosy setting. For those with food intolerances, Double Zero can accommodate, all pizzas can be made gluten-free and nut-free. The food is spectacular at a very fair price. Here is the perfect place for anyone to stop for a bite to eat in one of New York’s favourite neighbourhoods.
